Robert Burgess Moss, Sr.

September 27, 1930 — January 20, 2025

Mr. Robert "Bob" Burgess Moss, Sr., 94, of Plains, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 20, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

Born on September 27, 1930 in Lincolnton, Georgia, he was the son of the late Weaver and Allene Moss. Better known as Bobby to many and as PePa to his family, he lived his life in service to God, family and country. He was a crewchief in the Air Force for the F-86 and P-51 in the Korean War, earning the Bronze Star. Upon returning home from the war, he met and married Betty Horne. He furthered his education at the University of Georgia, cementing his lifelong love for Georgia Football. When not watching football, he enjoyed listening to the Gaither’s gospel music and laughing out loud to Jerry Clower.

He accepted the job of Superintendent of the University of Georgia Coastal Plains Experiment Station in Plains in 1961. He was an active member of Plains Methodist Church and the Lions Club for many years. He served the church in various capacities over his lifetime but perhaps his favorite was heading up the annual chicken-que fundraiser. He created the legendary BBQ sauce still used today, which has become known simply as “Moss Sauce”.

PePa would go on to serve the University of Georgia for 34 years and upon retirement enjoyed consulting for Birdsong Peanuts. This led to consulting internationally with French company, Menguy’s, which afforded Mema and him many wonderful trips across the pond. He served on the board of Southwest Georgia Farm Credit until his final retirement at the age of 83.

Despite an active, fruitful life, PePa always found time to spend with his children and grandchildren, proudly cheering them on and sharing in their achievements.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty H. Moss; his son, Robert B. Moss, Jr. (Marianne); his daughter, Linda Moss Cannon; his son, Jeffrey N. Moss (Camille); his grandchildren, Courtney Moss Rauls (Andy), Ashley Moss Meador (Mike), Catharine Moss Brannan (Glenn), Mallory Susanne Moss, Jeffrey “Jay” N. Moss, Jr. (Katy), Brett Cannon, and Daniel Cannon (Paige); as well as 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends for a visitation in the sanctuary at Plains Methodist Church on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 1:00PM with a funeral service immediately following, beginning at 2:00PM.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the caregivers who cared for Mr. Moss over the last year.
