On Wednesday night, July 12, 2023, Rosa Pearl Thornton Vining went to join her Heavenly Father. She had lived a full and productive life, sharing it with many friends who will miss her dearly. Rosa was born the only child of Byron and Mary Partain Thornton on October 20, 1930. After graduation from high school in Grantville, GA she attended business college in Atlanta, She and Gus Vining had been high school sweethearts and when he returned home on leave after two years in the Navy, they were married. Two years later their only son/child, David, was born. The family of three lived in French Morocco, Guam, Japan, Germany, Hawaii, Maryland, and California. Rosa worked for the Chaplain in each location. She was school secretary in many stations. Rosa and Gus did volunteer work wherever they were stationed. After retirement as a school secretary from the Ft. Benning Children's Dependent School System, Rosa was a volunteer quilter at Westville in Lumpkin, GA and at Callaway Gardens, and Gus demonstrated chair caning. They also delivered for Meals on Wheels. Rosa cultivated many friends at Magnolia Manor and for her 20 years there, she sewed bibs, hemmed pants legs, made quilts, and crocheted baby blankets for free for anyone needing them. Rosa was an active member of Lee Street Methodist Church in Americus. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 PM on Monday, July 17, from the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., with Dr. Dennis Stalvey officiating. Interment will be private at Andersonville National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, beginning at 1:00 PM, at Hancock Funeral Home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Augustus Gilmer Vining. Survivors include her son, David Vining (Elise); grandson, John David Vining; a special cousin and family member Joy Williams; cherished cousins; an uncle; and several nieces and nephews.
