William Johnson Freeman, age 92, of Jacksonville, Florida, died on April 2, 2023 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville. Mr. Freeman was born and raised in Sumter County. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Freeman, Sr. William attended New Era and Americus city schools, graduating in 1948. During his teen and early adult years, he worked at Wallis Electric Company. He attended GSCW and served in the Air Force before attending Georgia Tech, the alma mater of his mentor, Mr. T.J. Wallis. William was employed as a Field Director with the American Red Cross. He was attached to military bases including Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell, Fort Rucker, Paris Island, Jacksonville Naval Air Station, and Mayport Florida. He served with distinction in the Philippines, Okinawa, Taiwan, Japan, Spain and Viet Nam. He received many citations for his work including appreciation for securing women to accompany Vietnamese babies on flights from Vietnam orphanages. William was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Douglas Freeman, Jr. and sister Martha Frances Bergquist; nephews Douglas Freeman III, Tommy Freeman, and Joseph Butler; and nieces Sharon Bergquist and Carol Martin. He is survived by his wife Mitzi {Sun Shu Chun}; son James Freeman of Jacksonville; daughter Judy Hendricks (Wayne) of Macon; grandchildren Savannah, Haley and Sophia Hendricks; sisters Helen Freeman Butler and Carolyn Freeman Cromer, both of Vienna; and nephews Stephen Freeman, Lance Butler, Riley Butler, Craig Bergquist, and Gregg Bergquist; and niece Shawn Satterfield. Family graveside services will be held at the Freeman-Hardin Cemetery with Rev. Daryl Brown officiating.
